PE and Sports Premium
🏫 What Is the Sports Premium and How Does It Help?
The Primary PE and Sport Premium is a government-funded initiative that helps primary schools across England improve their physical education, physical activity, and sport provision.
This funding supports schools in giving every child an active start in life by ensuring they have access to high-quality PE, a wide range of sporting opportunities, and daily physical activity. Regular exercise has been shown to improve pupils’ physical and mental health, behaviour, and overall academic achievement.
🎯 What Are the Objectives of the Sports Premium?
The Primary PE and Sport Premium is ring-fenced, meaning it must only be spent on improving PE and sport provision in schools.
The funding aims to bring about lasting improvements across all areas of PE by enhancing the quality of teaching, the variety of activities available, and pupils’ engagement in physical activity.
The key objectives are to:
-
Engage pupils in regular physical and healthy activity
-
Raise the profile of PE and sport across the school as a tool for whole-school improvement
-
Increase the confidence, knowledge, and skills of all staff in teaching PE and sport
-
Provide a broader range of sports and activities for all pupils
-
Increase participation in competitive sport
⚙️ How Do We Use the Funding?
We use the funding to make additional and sustainable improvements to the quality of PE, sport, and physical activity across the school. Our focus is on improving provision now and building staff expertise and resources to benefit future pupils.

🏫 1. Priorities for this Year (2025–2026)
Our priorities for PE and Sport at Waterside Primary Academy are to:
-
Continue to provide a high-quality, inclusive PE curriculum that supports the development of physical literacy, teamwork, and confidence for all pupils.
-
Broaden the range of activities offered during the school day and at break and lunchtimes, ensuring all pupils are active for at least 30 minutes per day in school.
-
Increase participation in after-school clubs and competitive sport, targeting pupils who are less active.
-
Provide specialist coaching and enrichment experiences to inspire lifelong engagement in sport and physical activity.
-
Improve and maintain resources, equipment, and outdoor spaces to ensure safe, engaging, and progressive learning experiences.
-
Further develop staff confidence through ongoing professional development and collaboration with local schools through our Waterside Sports League.
⚙️ 2. How We Are Going to Achieve These Priorities
To achieve these goals, we will:
-
Work with Premier Education to deliver a full, high-quality PE curriculum that meets national expectations and includes ongoing staff CPD.
-
Expand active opportunities during play and lunchtimes through structured activities, new equipment, and “active movement” routines embedded across the school day.
-
Run a wide range of after-school sports clubs (boxing, dance, football, cricket, athletics, and netball) delivered by both staff and specialist coaches, targeting children who are less active.
-
Host specialist experience days such as Phasels Wood Activity Day, BMX and Scooter Workshops, and local inter-school sports events to provide variety and inspiration.
-
Sustain and grow the Chiltern Sports League, now including 9 local primary schools, with fixtures in football, netball, tag rugby, rounders, and cricket.
-
Invest in resources and facilities – replacing older equipment, maintaining safety standards, and enhancing outdoor learning opportunities.
-
Develop Outdoor Learning provision through staff training, linking physical activity to outdoor education.
-
Ensure ongoing swimming provision meets national curriculum requirements and that all pupils gain water safety skills.
🎯 3. What We Expect the Outcome to Be
Through this work, we expect to see:

All pupils participating in regular physical activity and developing positive attitudes towards health, fitness, and well-being.

A broad and inclusive PE curriculum where every child experiences success and progress, regardless of ability or background.
