We are Artists

ART lead - Miss Jones

At Waterside, we recognise that Art and Design stimulates creativity and imagination. In our lessons we aim to provide visual, tactile and sensory experiences and a special way of understanding and responding to the world. We strive to enable children of all abilities to communicate what they see, feel and think through the use of colour, texture, form, pattern and different materials and processes.

Staff encourage children to be curious, to explore ideas and meanings through the work of a range of artists and designers. Through learning about the roles and functions of art, children can explore the impact it has had on contemporary life and that of different times and cultures. The appreciation and enjoyment of the visual arts enriches all our lives.

The school uses the KAPOW scheme to support their planning in art and design. There is a long-term plan to show the themes and units of work for each term in each year group. Unit plans identify:

  • The core theme which is used as the basis for learning
  • The main art and design subject knowledge to be covered in relation to the theme
  • Key art and designs skills to be covered during the unit of work
  • Core vocabulary which will be developed

In each of our lessons we aim to develop both knowledge and skills by:

  • Generating ideas and using sketchbooks to create artwork inspired by a range of artists.
  • Developing drawing, painting, printmaking, photography, mixed media, craft techniques and sculpture skills.
  • Understanding the formal elements: exploring colour, form, line, pattern, shape, texture and tone.
  • Developing a knowledge of artists: discovering artists' work and techniques.
  • Building evaluation skills and understanding how to critique their own work and that of others
